Helt delivers fireworks in final Bees Start, Burlington wins on July 4th in Clinton
Clinton, IA - Bobby Helt (Lake Erie College) ended his Burlington career with a bang, as the righty threw for over six innings with one run allowed and picked up the victory.
Helt's fireworks, paired with clutch hitting, was enough for the Burlington Bees (7-25, 1-2) to steal victory from the Clinton Lumberkings (18-12, 3-1) on the 4th of July Festival at NelsonCorp Field.
Burlington snapped Clinton's four game winning streak, and got its first win against the divisional rival this season.
The game turned into a pitcher's duel between Helt and the Lumberkings's starter Sam George, who tossed five innings of one earned run ball. George received the loss.
Clinton opened the scoring with a homerun in the bottom of the fourth, but Helt did not back down. He posted a season high eight strikeouts, while stranding six on base.
Burlington gritted out its first run. Skyler Agnew (Hawaii-Pacific) reached to lead off the fifth by a hit by pitch and stole second. He moved to third on a deep flyout from Cedric Dunnwald (Mt.Mercy University), before scoring on an error from the pitcher.
The team kept it going in the next inning. Corey Boyette (Heartland CC) walked to open up the frame and advanced to second via the passed ball.
Keanu Spenser (Queens University of Charlotte) drove him home for his first RBI of the season, which ended up being the game winning run. It gave the Bees their first lead.
When the team needed insurance runs, Agnew delivered. In the eighth, he smashed a two-run homerun over the right field wall that made the score 4-1. It was his second homer in as many games, as he has four RBI's in the last two,
Jack Duncan (Western Illinois) continued the good pitching, tossing three shutout innings for his team-leading third save of the year. Duncan stranded four on base.
Dunnwald was the only player on either team with multiple-hits in a two for four day. Both team's totaled six hits.
The rubber match between these two teams takes place July 4 at Community Field at 6:30 p.m in Capes & Crowns Night.
